This conductor score presents Suite I, Max Burger’s arrangement for string orchestra of four lyrical piano songs by Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847). The included string count is 8-8-5-5-5.
Suite I contains “Volkslied” (Op. 53, No. 5), “Adagio” (Op. 53, No. 4), “Frühlingslied” (Op. 62, No. 6), and “Venetianisches Gondellied” (Op. 62, No. 5).
Mendelssohn wrote the eight-volume Songs Without Words (Lieder Ohne Worte) collection between 1829 and 1845. Each volume contains six songs of varying mood and character; five volumes were dedicated to women, including his friend Clara Schumann. The first volume was published in London in 1832 as Original Melodies for the Pianoforte. Bavarian composer and music teacher Max Burger (1856–1917) arranged two suites of these songs for string orchestra.
