Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871–1942) wrote String Quartet No. 2, Op. 15 between 1913 and 1915. This edition includes a conductor score and parts and is a reprint of the original edition.
A close colleague, friend, and brother-in-law of Arnold Schoenberg, Zemlinsky drew on musical numerology in this turbulent work. Its background included tragedies involving Zemlinsky’s sister and Schoenberg’s wife, Mathilde; Zemlinsky used the music to apologize to Schoenberg for blaming him for the recent events.
The quartet was first performed in Vienna in 1918.
