This reprint conductor score presents “Villanelle,” the first song from Hector Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’Été (Summer Nights), in its original key of A. It is scored for solo voice (tenor or soprano) with instrumentation of 2.1.2.1: 0.0.0.0: strings (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
Berlioz (1803–1869) set six poems by his neighbor and friend Théophile Gautier. The poems explore love, moving from youthful innocence to loss and renewal. Originally composed in 1841 for solo vocalist and piano, the six songs were each orchestrated by Berlioz in 1856. Rediscovered in the 20th century after years of neglect, the cycle has become one of his most popular works.
The songs’ original keys are 1. A; 2. B; 3. F minor; 4. F-sharp; 5. D; and 6. F. The publisher offers the songs individually and as a complete set. Robert Sutherland edited five songs and transposed them into additional keys: “Villanelle” in E, F, and G; “Absence” in Db, D, Eb, and E; “Au Cimetière, Clair de lune” in Bb, B, and C; and “L’Île inconnue” in D, Eb, and E. Transpositions of “Le Spectre de la rose” to D and “Sur les Lagunes” to G minor are also available.
“Villanelle” celebrates spring and love, inviting the beloved to walk through the forest, gather wild strawberries, and hold hands, accompanied by charming melodies.
