This conductor score is for Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 1 in D major, Hob. I:1. Haydn (1732–1809) composed the symphony in 1757, at the beginning of his role as music director for Count Karl Joseph Franz Morzin.
The work opens with a slow-building crescendo, an innovative device reflecting the emerging Classical style. It does not use sonata-allegro form or a minuet and trio; instead, sudden texture shifts and melodic snippets provide musical interest.
