Symphony No. 4, Op. 54 (Le Poeme De L'extase) is a single-movement work for large orchestra by Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915). This conductor score & parts edition presents the orchestral work known as Le Poème de l'Extase (The Poem of Ecstasy).
Composed near Genoa between 1905 and 1908, the piece reflects Scriabin's fascination with mysticism and Nietzschean philosophy, depicting a soul's escape to a higher plane of spiritual consciousness. He originally intended to call it Poème orgiaque.
Instrumentation: 3+Picc.3+EH.3+BCl.3+CBsn: 8.5.3.1: Timp.Perc(5-6): Clst.Org.2Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
The composer performed a piano version for a gathering of several Russian musical figures, who were puzzled by its daring ambiguity. The first performance took place in New York City on December 10, 1908.
