The Tree of Man is a vocal score for Carl Vine’s secular cantata for soprano and strings. The 11-minute work was written in 2012 for the Australian Chamber Orchestra and soprano Daniele de Niese.
Vine based the cantata on a passage from The Tree of Man, the novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Patrick White. Vine knew White personally and had written music for several of his stage plays in the 1980s.
The music moves from quietly insistent beginnings through a rhapsodic central section to a haunting conclusion. The brooding opening returns before the music evaporates into the air.
