Trial by Jury (Original Version) is a reprint edition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s one-act comic opera. It features vocal soli for 6 roles (STTBBB), mixed chorus, and piano accompaniment. The orchestra score and parts are also available from Edwin F. Kalmus.
Gilbert and Sullivan had previously worked together on Thespis in 1871-72, a work for the Christmas season. For Trial by Jury, opera impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte suggested Gilbert contact Sullivan about a libretto Gilbert had already written, as Carte needed a short work to accompany Jacques Offenbach’s popular La Périchole.
The opera premiered on March 3rd, 1875 at the Royalty Theatre in London, with the composer conducting. Although it was initially at the bottom of the bill, it became an unexpected hit and quickly toured England and Ireland.
The work lampoons the “Learned Judge” and the legal system in a lawsuit involving a “breath of promise of marriage.” It has remained a staple of the light opera repertory.
