This reprint edition is the men's T/B choral score for Turandot in Franco Alfano's revised completion, known as Alfano II. It follows Puccini's sketches more closely than Alfano's rejected first version.
Puccini set the story in China, though it originated in the Persian collection The Book of One Thousand and One Days. The opera follows Princess Turandot's deadly tests for suitors and the Unknown Prince Calaf, who passes them and ultimately persuades her to marry him. Puccini died of a heart attack in 1924 before completing the opera; he had finished the first two acts and most of the third, including Calaf's aria “Nessun Dorma.”
At Puccini's publisher and family's request, Alfano completed the opera. His first attempt was rejected by the publisher and conductor Arturo Toscanini for liberties with the libretto and added musical passages. Alfano's second version adhered more closely to Puccini's sketches and became the popular completion. At the premiere, Toscanini stopped where Puccini's work ended, in tribute to the composer.
The edition includes both the original individual percussion parts and additional new percussion scores to suit musicians' preferences.
