Alban Berg’s Vier Stücke für Klarinette und Klavier (Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano), Op. 5, is a reprint edition containing 2 playing scores. Composed in 1913, these four pieces are Berg’s only true miniatures.
The movements are 1. Mäßig, 2. Sehr langsam, 3. Sehr rasch, and 4. Langsam. Tempo, articulation, timbral effects, and dynamics change throughout the work.
After a fateful, somewhat traumatic lesson with his tutor Arnold Schoenberg, Berg abandoned small-scale works and turned toward large extended orchestral works at Schoenberg’s insistence. Despite Schoenberg’s criticism in 1913, the work premiered on October 17, 1919, at Schoenberg’s Society for Private Musical Performances in Vienna.
