This score and parts set presents Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in D minor, MWV O 3 (2nd version), a work he composed in 1822 at age 13. This is a reprint of the Renate Unger edition. The set string count is 8-8-5-5-5.
Mendelssohn wrote the concerto for Eduard Rietz, his dear friend and teacher. The score was forgotten; after Mendelssohn’s death, his widow gave it to his friend Ferdinand David.
The work remained unknown until 1951, when violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin was shown the manuscript by a London rate books dealer. Menuhin bought the rights from the Mendelssohn family, edited the concerto, and gave its first performance in well over 100 years at Carnegie Hall on February 4, 1952. Though less popular than Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, it receives frequent performances.
