“Wash Rag” is a humorous miniature for string quartet by Alan Shulman, composed in 1979. This medium-slow rag, or “cakewalk,” follows a loose AABA form and offers a lighthearted choice for a recital program or a medium-level contest piece.
The bluesy, graceful main melody begins with a call-and-response exchange between the first violin and the rest of the ensemble. The second violin leads the theme’s return as the ensemble plays pizzicato, creating a playful, mock-serious effect. In the B section, the first violin returns to the opening’s stately mood before the restless cello takes the lead ahead of the final reprise.
The newly engraved Latham Music edition was first published in 2021, after a copy of the composer’s autograph parts was discovered in the archives of another Alan Shulman piece. It represents the work’s first publication and its first full score. The ensemble eventually regroups for a resolute final riff.
